Barbour was conceived and founded in South Shields more than 120 years ago by John Barbour who realised the need for reliable, waterproof outerwear amid the working class population to protect them from the worst of north east England’s weather. Wanting to move away from the ill-fitting, inflexible jackets the local fisherman waterproofed with tar and fish oils, Barbour created an innovative soft oilcloth which produced a more comfortable and functional waterproof jacket that could stand the test of time. And thus, the world-renowned Barbour waxed jacket was born. Today, still based in South Shields and currently in its fifth generation of family ownership, Barbour is synonymous with the British countryside and has established itself as one of the most important heritage brands of the last century. Loved around the globe for its superior craftsmanship, unique silhouettes and outdoor values, Barbour’s collection encompasses men’s, women’s and children’s fashion and features the iconic waxed and quilted jackets amongst a whole host of alfresco-inspired clothing, footwear and accessories.
